Exercise Therapy and Active Living

Physical activity lowers the risk of mortality, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, several cancers, anxiety, depression, dementia, weight gain and adverse blood lipid profile. Exercise therapy is also recommended for the management of many chronic musculoskeletal conditions as it improves bone health, increases muscular strength and endurance and improves physical function.

Our team of exercise specialists work with people of all ages to support increasing physical activity and to prescribe exercise therapy and self-management education to improve the management of chronic conditions.

  • Services at the Edmonton Community Health Hub North require a referral from your family doctor, who is a member of the PCN.
  • Services at Rundle Health Centre are available to you if you have a T5W, T5A or T5Y postal code. You do not require a referral. You can either call or walk in to book an appointment.

What to expect

When referred to the PCN for exercise therapy and active living services, you will be booked for a one-on-one appointment with an exercise specialist where they will gather your health history, talk about your goals for treatment and come up with a treatment plan. Often a physical assessment is necessary to help identify your starting point and better understand which exercises are most appropriate for you, therefore, in-person visits are recommended, however, phone/video appointments are also available upon request.

The treatment plan may include one-on-one follow-up sessions to develop a home exercise program or may include a referral to a group program. The focus of treatment will be on learning exercises, understanding your condition, and helping you self-manage. Exercise specialists do not provide any hands-on therapy and do not place devices on you in our sessions (heat, TENs etc.)
